When I was first researching, looking to find answers on the industry, & certifications it was difficult to find independent information about the certifications. What should be the cost of a certification? How long are they good for? Do I need to take a class? Which certifications are recognized by the industry & which aren’t. I had a lot of questions & I had to hunt to find them in many different places.
I wanted to write this book to compile all the certification information because despite the time that has passed since I first got into the industry this is still a question that plagues so many people online and also one I get so often from students in my program.
The 3 certifications I cover in the book are the CSM, PSM, & SSM, these are the 3 main entry level Scrum certifications that are globally recognized. Any foundational certifications beyond these 3 are either not recognized or probably aren’t worth the investment. When searching the career sites, 1 of these 3 are usually listed as a requirement in the job description.
I start with my high-level overview of each, then deep dive on each certification and their respective governing bodies. The next question I usually get is which certification do I suggest they get.
